## Overview

Every stocktake you create in Stokkd has a **type**, selected when the stocktake is created. The type determines how much of your site's inventory is counted, what counting workflow applies, and what happens when the stocktake is finalised. The type cannot be changed after the stocktake has been created.

Three types are available:

- **Full** — count every product held at the site
- **Partial** — count only specific product categories
- **Adjustment** — make quick, targeted corrections without a full counting workflow

## Full Stocktake

A **Full stocktake** covers every product held at the site. It is the default type when creating a new stocktake, and the type most businesses use for routine or compliance counts.

- Counting is organized using **areas** (zones), so different parts of the site can be assigned to different counters and tracked independently.
- Because every product at the site is in scope, any item that is never scanned will have their quantity adjusted to zero — this ensures the stocktake fully accounts for every product, including unexpected shrinkage.
- Full stocktakes support both **single** and **double** count methods.
- Only **one active Full stocktake can exist per site at a time**. While a Full stocktake is open (not yet posted), you cannot create *any* new stocktake — of any type — for that site. You must finalize and post, or delete, the existing Full stocktake first.
- Full stocktakes are the only type that counts toward your subscription's stocktake usage limits, if your plan has them.

## Partial Stocktake

A **Partial stocktake** counts only a subset of your inventory — specific product categories — rather than everything on site. This is useful for cycle counts ('rolling stocktakes'), high-value category checks, or spot checks between full counts.

- When creating a Partial stocktake, you **select which categories to include** from your product's category hierarchy. This hierarchy (up to four levels) comes directly from the category fields in your uploaded stock file.
- Only products in the selected categories are included in the stocktake. Products outside those categories are left untouched and will not generate variances — they are simply out of scope for this count.
- Like Full stocktakes, Partial stocktakes are still organised using **areas**, but only across the selected categories.
- Partial stocktakes do **not** count toward your plan's stocktake usage limits.

## Adjustment Stocktake

An **Adjustment stocktake** is a simplified, fast path for making targeted corrections to specific product quantities, without running the full area-based counting workflow.

- Adjustment stocktakes **skip areas and zones entirely** — there is no site-wide organization step.
- Before posting, Stokkd only checks that adjustment data (counted quantities) exists. The usual area completion and discrepancy-review checks required for Full and Partial stocktakes do not apply.
- This makes Adjustment the right choice when you already know exactly which products need correcting — for example, after a known stock loss, damage write-off, or a quick correction identified outside of a formal count.
- Adjustment stocktakes do **not** count toward your plan's stocktake usage limits.

## Comparison

| | Full | Partial | Adjustment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Scope** | Every product at the site | Selected categories only | Specific products, ad hoc |
| **Uses areas/zones** | Yes | Yes, within selected categories | No |
| **Unscanned items** | Recorded at zero | Only tracked within selected categories | Not applicable |
| **Before posting** | Areas must be fully scanned and reviewed | Areas must be fully scanned and reviewed | Only requires adjustment data to exist |
| **Can run alongside an open Full stocktake at the same site** | No — only one active Full stocktake per site | No — blocked while a Full stocktake is open | No — blocked while a Full stocktake is open |
| **Counts toward billing/plan limit** | Yes | No | No |

## Choosing the Right Type

- **Doing a regular, complete, or compliance count of the whole site?** Use **Full**.
- **Checking or cycle-counting a specific category, such as high-value or fast-moving stock?** Use **Partial**.
- **Correcting a handful of known products without running a full count?** Use **Adjustment**.

Remember that creating any stocktake — of any type — is blocked for a site while a Full stocktake is already open there. If you need to run a quick Adjustment or Partial count, make sure no Full stocktake is currently in progress for that site.

## Best Practices

- **Finish or post Full stocktakes promptly.** Since they block all other stocktakes at the same site, an abandoned Full stocktake can prevent routine Adjustments from being made.
- **Use Partial stocktakes for recurring cycle counts** of specific categories rather than running a Full count every time — it saves counting effort and doesn't affect your plan's usage limit.
- **Reserve Adjustment stocktakes for known, specific corrections** rather than broad counting — because they skip area and discrepancy checks, they are not a substitute for a proper Full or Partial count.
- **Check your category hierarchy before creating a Partial stocktake.** The categories available to select come from your uploaded stock file, so inconsistent category data in your POS export will limit how precisely you can scope a Partial count.
