## Overview

Before a stocktake's results are posted, Stokkd gives you a chance to catch mistakes — this is the **review** step. Which review process applies depends on the [*count type*](https://website-staging.stokkd.com/count-types) you chose when the stocktake was created:

- **Double Count** stocktakes get a **Count Errors review**, checked area by area as counting happens. The results are also reviewed on the Variances screen, as a final check.
- **Single Count** stocktakes get a **Variances review**, checked once at finalization (after counting is complete).

Both exist for the same reason — to make sure what was actually counted is correct before it changes your stock levels — but they happen at different points in the process and compare different things.

## Count Errors Review (Double Count)

When a stocktake uses **Double Count**, every area is counted twice, independently — Count 1 and Count 2. Once both passes for an area are complete, Stokkd compares them item by item.

- Any item where Count 1 and Count 2 **don't match** becomes a **Count Error** for that area.
- Count Errors must be reviewed and resolved — with an adjustment and a reason if needed — before the area can move on.
- Because review happens **per area**, you don't have to wait for the whole stocktake to finish. An area that's done with both counts can be reviewed and cleared while other areas are still being counted.
- This review only compares your two counts against **each other** — it doesn't yet compare them against your system's expected quantities. That comparison happens separately, during finalization.

See [Count Types](https://website-staging.stokkd.com/count-types) for the full explanation of how Single and Double counting work.

## Variances Review (Single Count, at Finalization)

When a stocktake uses **Single Count**, there's no second pass to compare against — so Stokkd instead compares your counted quantities against the **expected quantities** from your uploaded stock file or API import.

- This comparison only happens once, at **finalisation**, after all areas in the stocktake are complete.
- Any item where the counted quantity differs from the expected quantity shows up as a **variance**.
- Variances review shows you exactly what's changed since the last known stock level, so you can confirm the differences are genuine before anything is posted.
- You can make final adjustments to counted quantities during this review, right up until the stocktake is posted.

## Review and Stocktake Type

Whether a review step is available at all depends on the [stocktake type](https://website-staging.stokkd.com/stocktake-types), not just the count type:

| Stocktake Type | Double Count | Single Count |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Full** | Count Errors review, then Variances review | Variances review only |
| **Partial** | Count Errors review, then Variances review | Variances review only |
| **Adjustment** | Not applicable | **No review step** |

## Comparison

| | Count Errors Review | Variances Review |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Applies to** | Double Count stocktakes | Single Count stocktakes |
| **When it happens** | During counting, per area | At finalization, once all counting is complete |
| **What it compares** | Count 1 vs Count 2 (your two counts against each other) | Counted quantity vs expected quantity (your count against the system) |
| **Can start before the whole stocktake is finished?** | Yes — area by area | No — only once every area is complete |
| **Adjustments allowed** | Yes, with a reason | Yes, as final adjustments before posting |

## Best Practices

- **Resolve Count Errors as soon as an area finishes both counts** — don't let them pile up until the end of the stocktake.
- **Assign Count 1 and Count 2 to different people or devices.** Reviewing two counts from the same counter catches far fewer genuine mistakes.
- **Treat variances as a prompt to investigate, not just a number to accept.** A large or unexpected variance is often worth a quick physical recheck before posting.
- **Remember, Double Count gives you an earlier warning.** Because Count Errors are caught during counting rather than at finalization, problems surface — and can be fixed — much sooner than with a Single Count stocktake.
